OAM recipient dedicates honour to his fellow staff and volunteers

A Singleton man said his Order of Australia Medal is for everyone he’s worked and volunteered with over the past five decades.

Gerard McMillan was awarded an OAM in the recent Australia Day Honours List after 40 years running the Singleton Diggers Clubs and a range of volunteer roles including Rotary and his local church among many others.

Gerard told this week’s iHeart Upper Hunter podcast…he was surprised to be recognised.

Mr McMillan made lifelong friends while helping a family from Kosovo settle in the town during their temporary stay in 1999 to avoid a war back home.

Gerard said it was one of his most treasured experiences was helping out the temporary refugee family.
