Muswellbrook mayor Steve Reynolds says he’ll be making sure his voice is heard at this week’s Australian Local Government (ACLG) conference in Canberra.

The event, which has attracted 600 delegates from around Australia, returned last year for the first time in a decade after being shut down by the previous federal government.

It was shut down for a decade under the previous federal government before being revived last year as part of Prime MinisterANTHONY ALBANESE’s push to bring local leaders back into the fold.

Local Government Minister Kristy McBain said the expertise of local councils is central to the positive changes the government wants to make.

“Getting everyone in the same room to discuss how we can tackle challenges and maximise opportunities has a huge impact on strengthening service delivery, forging fit-for-purpose programs, and delivering money where it’s needed most,” the minister said.

“We’re building on the success of last year’s ACLG and renewing our commitment to this key forum in 2024, because local government shouldn’t be an afterthought when it comes to whole-of-government policies.”

Cr Reynolds said he had already met with some of Canberra’s big hitters.

“David Littleproud, Ted O’Brien, Madeline King, Chris Bowen, Barnaby Joyce, Peter Dutton – so we’re making some good representations,” Cr Reynolds said.

“We’re down here for the Australian Local Government Conference … and outcome-driven meetings is what we want.

“They’re definitely going to hear my voice, I’ll tell you right now.”

The 2024 ACLG has been planned to coincide with the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly, which is also taking place this week.
