Murrurundi residents have condemned Upper Hunter Shire Council over their proposal to decommission the town’s dam.

Council staff told a public meeting yesterday afternoon this would save ratepayers $400,000 a year, which could be reinvested in new water infrastructure across the shire.

Numerous attendees questioned how genuine the council was to listen to community views after already submitting feedback several months ago.

Resident Mark Martin was one of many who left the meeting very unhappy.

“The council doesn’t care what the community thinks. We expected them to come here today with facts and figures and they didn’t. This so-called community consultation is a sham,” he said.

The Hunter Valley Newsroom has asked the Upper Hunter Shire Council for comment.
