Fire crews have been conducting fire protection duties in the Sedgenhoe Valley overnight as a blaze burns in their direction.

The blaze ignited in the vicinity of Barton Street Scone yesterday sending massive clouds of smoke up in the air and threatening many homes.

Residents were told to shelter in place by mid-afternoon when the Rural Fire Service issued an EMERGENCY WARNING advising it was too late to leave.

A change in wind direction then sent the fire east of the town towards the Sedgenhoe Valley.

RFS Deputy Commissioner Peter McKecknie told the Hunter Valley Newsroom this morning there is now no immediate threat to residents.

The warning level for the fire currently sits at the ADVICE level.
